Purpose

The purpose of Health class is to provide students with the ability to get a better understanding of the body, as well as learning about positive life skills and decision-making.

Course Outline

The students will focus on the following material throughout the year:

  • Body Systems:  Cardiovascular System and Digestive System
  • Nutrition:  the major nutrients needed for the body to survive, the functions of these nutrients, and healthy food sources where these nutrients could be found
  • Emotional Health - decision making and goal setting:  being able to evaluate a difficult situation and coming up with a healthy resolution, creating achievable goals that can be monitored and analyzed throughout the process
  • Alcohol:  side effects and factors  that relate to alcohol use, drinking and driving, alcoholism, and media portrayal of the products
  • Inhalants:  understanding what they are, side effects from using them, and identifying ways they can be used
  • Occupational Health:  analyzing one's interests to come up with potential career paths one might want to pursue in the future
  • Character Development and Healthy Relationships:  examining your own core values and how they were developed
  • Understanding different types of families, friendships, and relationships and how to avoid conflict in differnet situations

Materials Needed

Students are expected to come to each class with the following materials:

*  Writing Utensil(s)

*  Lap top

Failure to bring these items to class will result in deduction of participation/preparation points (See Grading).

MATERIAL NOT NEEDED:  CELL PHONE

Students will be expected to have their cell phones away and silent in their book bags when they come to class.  Any student who is caught using their cell phone without permission during class will have it taken away and handed in to the main office for further disciplinary action.

Absences and Lateness

All students who are absent from class are responsible for any work missed in class.  Students may communicate with Mr. Keane on any work/notes that need to be completed.  If a student misses any assignments or written assessments, they are responsible to reschedule a time to take the assessment no later than a week after the test has been given.

Students are expected to report to the classroom before the bell rings.  Any student who is late to class will have preparation/participation points deducted from their grade.  If tardiness becomes a recurring issue, the student will go through proper discipline procedures (see Rules and Consequences).

Rules and Consequences

Participation.  Preparation.  Respect.  These are the three main things that are expected to be displayed by all students in class.  Any student who decides to become a disruption in class will not only lose participation/preparation points but will be given the following discipline system:

         1st Offense:  Verbal warning after class

         2nd Offense:  After School Detention

         3rd Offense:  Administrative Contact

Grading
